New York, How I love thee....

A magical, magical weekend.  My buzz is wearing off and my Mega-withdrawls setting in.  We started at WNYC playing for the amazing Jon Schaffer.  I've never played a radio station that NICE!!!! Nothing personal KCRW, but holy crap!  High above Soho, we set up nervously and waited.  Once we were set up, we were released to get some lunch.  Upon returning I almost bumped into Mick Jagger... No shit.  Mick Fucking Jagger was exiting the elevator as I was entering!!!  I could read that as nothing but a good omen and as my nerves subsided, we put our collective game faces on and rocked some shit!!!  As "Moan all night" Really started cooking, I looked up and saw Jon (our host) rocking out in his chair and Kat Edmonson (our guest vocalist) dancing away... and IT WAS ON!!!!  Here is the link...  We start at about the half hour mark but the interview before us is amazing!!!
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/soundcheck/2012/feb/17/noah-and-megafauna-studio/
From WNYC we hiked it to Breakthrough Radio, an online radio show.  We had enough time to throw down a couple beers, then it was another amazing recording session which deserves it's own post once it is available to you all...

All this leading to Sunday night's show at Joe's Pub.  Joe's Pub is pretty much the classiest place we've ever played.  From their amazing staff to their beautiful layout, the history of the place and the photos on the wall of Leonard Coen preforming there is enough to give anyone butterflies.  But at about 5pm, Joe Rogers our label head at Silence Breaks pulled me aside and said we had to talk... Apperently the show was so over sold, we would not have as many guest list spots as we thought... a split second of panic, followed by Chris Lovejoy smiling and proclaiming "ROCKSTAR PROBLEMS!!!!"

That pretty much set the tone for an amazing evening of music.  Kat Edmonson held the Audience in the palm of her hand and tugged at all of our hearts with her amazing voice and rediculously good band.  Then we took the stage to a thunderous response.  I really hope none of this comes across as bragging or big headedness.  We worked really, really hard to make this weekend come together and boy did it.  I am just so proud of my amazing MegaFauna and so happy we were able to bring the thunder to New York.... and now the comedown is brutal, but inspiring me to scheme and make it all happen again, in many other cities across the world. Mega-Love for you all...

World Premieres and Whatnot!

This week, we premiere online, and premiered physically, our first music video for "Liquid Modernity (You Can Never Go Home)".  For those of you that joined last friday night at the Downtown Independent, I hope you had as much fun as we did.  I learned so much that night, like what my head would look like if it was 50 feet tall, and that if I'm going to make a thank you speech, I should probably write down all the names of everyone I want to thank.  There really are too many people to thank for this video.  I will post the full credits when we post the video...  And for our world wide debut, our friends at KCRW will be premiering the video on their website.  Hooray.  So I hope you all take a chance to watch it, then post it, the have your friends watch it, then post it... you know the drill.

I got your Tinsel right here!!!!

The Holidays are upon us. Another year gone. The earth has made it all the way around the sun (assuming you believe all that!) and we are all one year closer to... well you know what! I love this time of year. Los Angeles will begin emptying out soon, leaving only the hardcore to cruise around the highways at speeds of 45 and sometime 50mph! Amazing!!!!

It has really been an amazing year for Noah and the MegaFauna. One year ago this time, I had just laid down basic tracks for the record and was just beginning to see my vision come into focus. Like a periscope that catches the shore off in the distance but needs more adjusting to make sure it is there. Well, it was there.

In the year that has followed, I've made new best friends, we've made new fans, raised money on kickstarter, blew it all instantly, mastered a record, printed it to vinyl, made a ridiculous music video (coming out soon I promise), played in a Major Motion Picture, played New York, LA, and San Francisco and I swear, this is only the beginning. As legendary sea captain and kick ass bass player John Paul Jones said, "I have not yet begun to fight!" (I believe it was right before the shark incident).

So what better way to cap off the year, than recording four new songs for you all! Well, technically they are for my man Seth Fisher's movie "Passing Harold Blumenthal" which we also scored this year... shit I guess I forgot to mention that! We'll be in the studio with Adam Lasus here in LA and with Joe Rogers in the Bronx, and I'll have some new fun stuff for you all by late January.

Until then, stay warm and dry. Do nice things for others and yourselves. Remember to exercise regularly and come out soon and see us play.
Happy 2012 my darlings!

Anthems for a Stateless Nation released World Wide this week

This week, tomorrow (october 18) to be precise, the debut album from Noah and the MegaFauna, Anthems for a Stateless Nation will be released world wide. It was almost exactly a year ago to the day, I emailed my friend/producer/co-conspirator Adam Lasus with a funny idea. I wanted to record some songs I'd written as a way to fight off the doom and gloom of my rapidly approaching adulthood. I wanted to find a way to make a record combining the new gypsy jazz style of Guitar I was playing, with songs that I was writing. I wanted a format that allowed me to collaborate with musicians and artists I loved and respected and had always wanted to play with, and allowed many new musicians that I now love, respect and always want to play with.

It began with some emails with Adam, late night talks with my brothers Joshua, and Gabriel, phone calls, and texts, then adding my man Shiben Bhattacharya on bass. He recommended drummer Chris Lovejoy, and the weekend before Thanksgiving, 2010, we went to Fireproof Studio to record the basic tracks for what would become Anthems for a Stateless Nation. A day of rehearsing, then two days of tracking that can only be described as magical.

The year that has followed has been equally as magical, and has flown by like many years in Los Angles do. Living without real seasons plays hell on your sense of time. Hence all the 55 year old men dressed like Justin Bieber driving around. But this year was different. Not only did it fly by, but it did so with all the most fantastic artistic moments of my life as a musician.
There is an old Jewish song called Dyenu, which loosely translated means, "it would have been enough". When I stack up all the magic the year of making this record has been, I can't help but think that after every milestone, every session, it would have been enough. That I would be content if it had stopped there, but it didn't and continues even now!

It started with Shiben and Chris, then quickly went to writing with my brother Joshua and arranging with my brother Gabriel. Jamming last Thanksgiving with Wen Chang on violin. Meeting Steve Ferrone at my boxing gym and getting him to come play two songs! Collaborating lyrically with my best friends Joshua Lit, Joshua Seidenfeld and Will Chancellor. Gabe and Wen spending Christmas with us and a crazy 12 hour violin session. Being in Paris after new years with my lovely Jade Suazo and soaking up all that mojo to be used for lyrics and inspiration... Nights of snacking a tracking with Adam. Meeting Emily St Ammand Poliakoff and being blown away by her singing, horn laying one two punch at Bar 1642 and timidly asking her to come sing a song with me. Collaborating with my longtime friend Marriane Dissard, over the interwebs and getting her to bring her sultry french-ness to my track. Flying to New York to record in Joe Rogers' studio in the Bronx, a 48 hour marathon session of a six piece horn section, that ended in recording Kat Edmonson's heart breaking voice. Coming back and reuniting with our friend Steven Clothier to record some blistering Saxaphone. Recording my guitar teacher and friend Gonzalo Bergara's neck breaking leads. Getting to work with my dear friend Mindy Gaspar as she whispered and oooooo-ed my song into a dark, sexy wonderful place. Working with Michael Garza on perfecting the Artwork (well, he did all the work. I just smiled a lot.) A Kickstarter campaign that not only funded the mastering and pressing of vinyl, but also reunited me with scores of old friends and family. First gigs with the band! Another trip to New York to Sterling Sound to master the record with Greg Calbi. Gigs here and gigs and New York and San Francisco. An absolutely magical video shoot (still in post-production but getting close) for "Liquid Modernity (You can never go home)" directed by my cousin Travis Knight and starring my friend Daniel Stessen. Then getting to preform live in a Judd Apatow film while Paul Rudd and Chris O'Dowd cheered for us. And now working with Joe Rogers and Tim Plumely on getting the record out into the world...

So like I said, it's been a hell of a year so far. I can only imagine next year will be even better. With all the support and enthusiasm this project has garnered so far, we can really only move upward and onward. Thank you all for being a part of this, and if I forgot to mention you and your contribution, I hope you'll forgive me.

So check out Itunes tomorrow (october 18) and come see us this friday (October 21) in LA, or next month in New york

An amazing weekend!

Amazing weekend coming to a close... N+MF were filmed preforming live, in a huge movie production. Not sure how much is cool to talk about, but let's just say it was directed by really "Funny People" and by the end of the day I was feeling pretty "Knocked up" but not at all a "Freak" or a "Geek", and I'll never be a "40 year old virgin" to Hollywood. Oh and Paul Rudd is really handsome.

Gabriel and Wen flew in from New York to make it happen, and it was worth the thousands of miles and deathly fatigue!  What an amazing expirience so keep an eye out for us on the silver screen next spring!

Lots coming up, our record will be released world wide on October 18, then a release party at The Satellite (formerly Spaceland) that Friday night, October 21.

take care, do good work, and stay in touch

The Wai-ai-ting is the hardest part!

Ahhh man!  The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last!  I'm waiting for my 500 records to arive.  A giant fed ex truch just showed up and dropped off a tiny paper back sized package for my girlfriend... this is bullshit!

Oh well, I'm pretty excited so here's a picture of what the final, vinyl will look like!  I know... it's dead sexy!

Mega Weeks! San Francisco, Video shoots and Hotel Cafe

Wow, what a wild July it's been. Since returning from an Epic weekend in NYC, I've been up to San Francisco, filmed an amazing video, and had our best gig yet at Hotel Cafe... it's almost like this is a REAL band!

First a big thanks to Yoshi's and all you lovely Bay Areans. Bay Arean Pride!!! I guess that sounds a bit creepy (say it out loud and you'll see why.) I love it up there and Yoshi's was fantastic. What a space and what a groovey thing they have going on with their Sunday night songwriter thing. You play small band (3 people max) and there's three acts. Each plays for 20min then you swap. So you really hang and listen to everyone, then come up and play more! Really a cool idea. Especially when the bands are as good as they were. We had Boy in the Bubble, a band that features my best friend Josh Seidenfeld as the songwriter and singer. Then Caught in Motion, a really great SF band. But I must admit, my favorite part of the evening was being able to play with my brother Gabriel and his girlfriend the lovely ms Wen Chang.

We then headed south on the 5 for possibly the longest and most rewarding week of my life. A few months back I had a really silly idea about a music video for Liquid Modernity (you can never go home). I brought it to Micheal Garza, the wonderful artist behind all our visuals, and my cousin Travis Knight, our bow tied percussionist. The two of them along with my new hero Jeremy Brilliant our cinematographer, along with my girlfriend Jade Suazo as our stylist brought my silly little idea into a full blown unbelievable production. I don't want to tell you all too much about it here, as it deserves a proper blog after I've digested the experience.... and digested will be a lot funnier once you see the video!  If you want to check out a bunch of photos read my friend (and our assistant stylist) Ashley Tibbits blog here.  http://sallylouvintage.wordpress.com/2011/07/24/adventures-in-styling-noah-and-the-megafauna/

We closed the week out with a full band performance at The Hotel Cafe. A perfect ending or hopefully beginning to all this madness. Playing with all the members from the record and realizing the record, fully and live just makes me want to work that much harder. Big thanks to the amazing crowd and all the good people at Hotel Cafe. I'm drained so that's all I've got right now!
we'll see you soon my pretties

Ps Here's a live track from Saturday night!  Enjoy!

New York, New york

The city so nice, they named it twice. The big Pear, the city that only sleeps in August in very hot sticky apartments. Five days and seeing four sunsets later, I'm back in LA. Thanking you New York for three amazing shows, really wouldn't be enough. Neither would writing a cheesy song about you. All I offer you is what's left of my liver, and a solemn pledge that if I ever get out of the 74 degree, beautiful hell hole I live in, I've heading straight to you. My next car will be a subway. I will go to museums and not just when my parents are in town and I want to impress them. I will sit outside and drink a beer watching thousands of people walk by. My beer will suck compared to California, but the soot and the smells of the city will ruin my taste anyway. I'll grow grey fast from stress and say things like "Have you see the new Aaaakdjbfapa sculpture over on krexingsmon and 1078th? It's so sensual yet so yellow." And it will be awesome. I heart new york.

Here is kind of awesome video of us preforming in Central Park. There are two Ballerinas watching and I guess they just couldn't help themselves. Girls, if you ever find us, I've got two digital downloads with your names on them!

Wilkommen!

I'm going to try... I'm really going to try to keep this blog! It's like potted plants, they seem like such a good idea when you get them but soon they are withered and sad reminders of how un-grown up I am... but the few tomatoes I remember to harvest were well worth it, so let's try this bad boy out!

This will be a journal, a confession, a random smattering of English, facts nouns and often verbs. I don't expect anyone to read it, so anyone that does, let me apologize in advance for words like smattering. Also for using the word random... There are a few words that have crept into our modern vernacular, for instance literally, copious, honestly, and random. David Cross has literally covered, so I'll take random. I hate the way this word is used by people.
–adjective
1.
proceeding, made, or occurring without definite aim, reason, or pattern: the random selection of numbers.
2.
Statistics . of or characterizing a process of selection in which each item of a set has an equal probability of being chosen.
3.
Confused stoner response to anything that happens or anyone you see, anywhere ie "Just some random dude starnig at me through the bushes"

I remember walking my dog Mingus not too long ago and running into some one I knew who espoused "Wow! I'm just running into random people on the street!" I looked at her confused and replied, "I don't feel very random? I know why I'm here." Walking my dog gave me aim, and reason. The fact that I lived in the neighborhood gave me pattern. I sucked at statistics, but Im pretty sure I didn't have equal probability of being run into, as any other of her friends. Mingus said nothing but pissed on a near by bush, which was also not random but way more interesting.

Today I will practice as much guitar as possible. If you are reading this, again I apologize, but I'm assuming you've listened a bit to Noah and the MegaFauna. This project has at it's core the fundamentals of Django Reinhardt Jazz Manouche or as it's become known, Gypsy Jazz.

Gypsy Jazz is fucking hard... so blogging is really a way for me to procrastinate. I am really good at procrastination! Amazing when I can even pull it off for something I love doing like practicing my guiar... ahhh every word I type... every period... an extra second I could be practicing....

ok... that's all today
Randomly saying goodbye!
